Where Do I Start?

 

  • Explore topics to find where your interest lies
    • Start with your textbook and course materials, conversations with other students in the class and, of course, your professor.
    • Then browse beyond Google, using authoritative library reference sources to begin your exploration and find ideas.  Check the encyclopedias tab above for examples and links.
  • Develop and use a Search Strategy.
    • Once you have identified a topic, write it as a question.
    • Think of as many words as you can to describe your topic. Add more terms that you discover as you search.
    • Make thoughtful choices about where you search.  The library research databases will lead you to resources you would not be able to access for free via Google's search.  We pay for access to scholarly sources and more.  Check out the "Articles" tab above. 
  • Consider various opinions about controversial issues. 
    • Some library series that may help are listed in the "Diverse Views..." section under the "Choosing a Topic" tab above.
    • Pay attention to tone and slant when reading any source.  Who wrote it?  Why?
  • Discover more in depth
    • Read what others have published in books or periodical articles that you could develop into a topic. 
    • Use the tabs above for tips and suggestions for these.
  • Be flexible. 
    • You may decide to modify your topic as you gain knowledge about your topic.
