What is Leadership? (1 hour)

DISCUSSION PROMPTS FOR SMALL GROUP SESSION ONE:

1.  In the context of your work at Nicholson Library, how would you define "leadership"? Write your definition. (5 minutes)

2.  Thinking about "leadership" as you have just defined it, what "values" would best support the actions of our team? (5 minutes)

(REPORT BACK:  Each group shares their definition and their list of supporting values) (5 minutes)

PROMPTS FOR SMALL GROUP SESSION TWO:

3.  Mix the groups. In each "round" of this session, come up with an example (ideally, from your experience) to use to discuss application of one or more of the "values" from item 2 above to one of these areas of responsibility, eventually covering all three. If you identify other "values" in the process, add them to the discussion.  (15 minutes each topic = 45 minutes total)

  • Service to library users
  • Communication within the LW team and as leaders of Circ and EMS student workers
  • Teaching as the approach to reference and research questions

(REPORT BACK:  Each table pick ONE example to share, with comments about implications for our work as individuals within a team)

Nuts and Bolts (45 minutes)

Pizza Break (15 minutes)
