Types of Research Articles

Research articles come in a variety of types based on the research method used. 

Common research methods include:

  • interviews
  • observations
  • surveys
  • experiments
  • clinical trials
  • literature reviews
  • meta-analyses

Research articles can be sorted into both primary and secondary types. 

  • Primary research articles report on research conducted by the author(s) of the article. 
  • Secondary research articles analyze the research of other researchers.

Primary Research Articles

Empirical articles

Report the findings of a qualitative or quantitative research study. These studies collect data through observation, experimentation, or other research methods such as interviewing.

 


Meta-analysis articles 

Combine the data and findings of multiple quantitative studies with similar hypotheses.

 

Secondary Research Articles

Literature Review articles

Review, analyze, and synthesize published scholarly literature on a specific topic or question.
