Searching CINAHL

A Guide to Using CINAHL Complete

CINAHL Subject Headings

CINAHL Headings are the terms used to assign subject headings to the articles in the database, and using them is the most efficient way to search CINAHL.

1) Click the 'Suggest Subject Terms' box, enter your search terms, and click search.

2) Click the call out icon under the Scope column to see a definition of the subject heading.

3) Select the desired subject heading by checking the box next to it. This will also display the subheadings associated with the subject heading. You can also click the call out icon to read the scope of each subheading.

4) Click on the Subject Heading to see term in the hierarchical view of subject heading terms.

5) If you want the subject heading to be a major concept in the articles you are searching, then select 'Major Concept' in the article. You can also choose to 'Explode' your results, so that all narrower subject headings are searched as well.

6) Click 'Search Database' to run search.

7) Click on 'View Tutorials' at the top of the page to get help with using Subject Headings.
